For Technikkels, a manufacturer of smart packaging machines, we carried out the surface finishing of a stainless steel frame measuring 7000 x 2500 x 2700 mm.

The frame forms the base of a flexible filling and capping machine that processes up to 80 bottles per minute. In applications like this, the finish is not only aesthetic but also functional. The surface must be consistent across the entire structure, without deviations that could become visible or problematic during use.

The challenge.

With large constructions like this, the challenge shifts from “being able to process” to “controlling the process.”

Achieving a uniform surface on small parts is relatively straightforward. On a seven-meter frame, it becomes a different story. Variations in structure or color occur more easily and are immediately visible across large surfaces.

Practical factors also come into play, such as accessibility of all areas and controlled positioning of the frame during processing. This combination is where the complexity lies. The final result must be consistent everywhere, regardless of position, shape, or accessibility.

In these types of applications, glass bead blasting is traditionally used to achieve a uniform surface. It delivers a neat result, but in practice is more sensitive to variation, especially on larger constructions.

Approach: ViwateQ® wet polishing.

For this project, ViwateQ® Finishing was selected. This is an advanced form of wet blasting for stainless steel, also referred to as wet polishing.

The strength of this method lies in the level of control over both the process and the final result. Where processes like glass bead blasting can be more sensitive to variations in structure or appearance, ViwateQ® allows precise control over consistency across the entire surface.

The complete frame was treated in our cabin. During the process, the surface was continuously monitored for uniformity, both on large surfaces and in hard-to-reach areas. This control ensures consistent quality across the entire frame.

Stainless steel surface finishing at scale.

This project demonstrates that stainless steel surface finishing can be carried out in a controlled manner, even at large dimensions, provided the process is properly set up.
