Looking for precisely ground stainless steel with a guaranteed surface roughness value? Van Geenen specializes in stainless steel grinding and grinding stainless steel sheets to a specific surface roughness (Ra). We process stainless steel surfaces entirely to specification, tailored to the required Ra value, industry standards or further processing steps.
Whether it involves grinding large stainless steel plates or precision grinding technical components, we deliver a reproducible result that meets the highest technical and visual standards.
From coarse grinding to mirror-like finishes. From functional surface quality to aesthetic design.
Stainless steel grinding to the right level — technically, visually and hygienically responsible.
Grinding stainless steel sheets and plates is essential when surface quality, flatness or cleanability are critical factors. By grinding stainless steel plates to a controlled surface roughness (Ra), the surface can be precisely matched to the technical requirements of the application.
At Van Geenen, we grind stainless steel sheet material in a wide range of dimensions, from small components to very large plates. Thanks to our machinery and experience, we can grind stainless steel plates in large sizes while maintaining consistent surface quality and precise tolerances.
Grinding stainless steel plates can serve several purposes:
achieving a specific Ra surface roughness value
preparation for further surface finishing treatments
improving adhesion for welding or bonding
creating a visual finish for design or architectural applications
Through controlled abrasive grain build-up and precise process control, we ensure that stainless steel plate grinding always results in a reproducible surface ready for further processing.
The Ra value (roughness average) is the most commonly used measure of surface roughness. The lower the Ra, the smoother the surface. And that's essential for applications where hygiene, adhesion or cleanability plays a role - think food, pharma, semiconductor and high-tech structures.
Ra 0.8 - 0.4 μm: common for industrial applications
Ra ≤ 0.2 μm: required in critical environments
Ra ≤ 0.02 μm: possible via additional polishing
We achieve these values through mechanical grinding, with controlled grain structure, machining directions and optional follow-up steps such as polishing or ViwateQ® Finishing.
From coarse to fine. From functional to high-quality. Depending on the type of material and application, we put together the right grinding process. This starts with understanding the initial situation:
Cold Rolled Stainless Steel (2B): naturally low roughness - minimal machining required
Hot Rolled Stainless Steel (1D): coarser surface - more intensive approach required
Specialty Alloys: require custom approach and build
We grind in-house, longitudinally, transversely or directionally - with grit sizes from K36 to K1500, one- or two-sided, and always to size.
Ra value determines more than just surface texture. Each application requires a different approach. Here are some examples:
Low Ra value prevents attachment of dirt or bacteria
Smooth surface = easier cleaning = less risk
Also suitable as a preparation for ViwateQ® Finishing
Grinding increases adhesion for bonding or welding
Specific Ra values for technical tolerances
Fine grains or directionless finish for aesthetics
Combine with PVD coating for visual impact
In addition to linear grinding, we also provide directionless finishes such as Vibes, Angel Hair, Wirwar or Bibbing. A homogeneous, non-directional pattern that is perfect for:
Countertops
Wall panels
Gable cladding
Lift interiors
Scratches go in all directions - the result is a modern, robust and easy-care surface.
Size grinding to roughness value (Ra)
Grit sizes from K36 to K1500
One- or two-sided machining
In longitudinal, transverse or directional pattern
Max. dimensions: 14,000 × 6,000 mm
Suitable for: Stainless steel, Aluminum, Titanium
Optional: laser foiling, flattening, polishing or cleaning afterwards.
